Who Winds a Watch?

Only an heir
To an old-time watch...
    An inherited watch,
    A grandfather's watch,
    A Bulova, Benrus,
    A Longines, a Gruen,
One of the old-time windup watches...
Could explain winding a watch
To anyone knowing just batteried watches,
Who bewildered, would say,
    Stop winding so much,
    You'll ruin the watch.
But wound it must be...
Forefinger and thumb...back and forth,
Tightening the spring
With a knurled nob
To power the gears and the wheels
That...tick tock...
Move the hands around the face.
To be an heir to an old-time watch,
Is to know that an unwound watch,
Will stop.
