A Bird with Ego, Relaxed His Guard

As I finished my morning toast,
On the deck,
A bird with a walking nod said,
Leave the crumbs.
But I, sponge in hand
To gather the crumbs,
Said,
I don’t think so.
For every day you’ll stop by,
Expecting crumbs.
And others will see
And flock like geese
To get their share.
Annoyed, said the bird,
There is no equality of opportunity
In the animal kingdom.
We’re all independent contractors,
Supply-siders,
Survival of the fittest types.
Does that apply to the cat,
I asked,
On silent cat’s paws, nearing you?
And off he flew,
Reminded that instinct and fear
Will get you through the day.
